Private and small-group Glacier Park tours

Small group and private sound alike on a listing, and they mean different things. Every main tour on this site shares the vehicle or the boat with other guests, though the groups stay modest. This guide counts the seats on each tour and works out when paying for a whole vehicle starts to make sense.

Small group is not private

Every main tour here is shared. You buy seats rather than the vehicle, and other travelers who booked the same date ride along, which is why the prices stay where they are. The groups are still modest for a national park, and the table shows the caps each listing gives.

Tour Glacier's vans

The two driving tours are where most travelers want more room, and Tour Glacier's own listings tell you what to expect. The summer Viator page calls the tour "not always private" and caps it at 25, while the winter GetYourGuide page puts a standard group at up to 20. On Viator the price changes with group size and group discounts are offered, and the operator asks anyone who wants a private tour to contact it. Reviewers describe an unhurried pace even with company, with a guide who lets guests pick the stops and the time spent at each, plus frequent bathroom breaks. On one quiet winter day a guest even got an unplanned run to the east side, a stroke of luck rather than part of the plan.

So if you are a party of four or five, price your exact group for Tour Glacier's west side driving tour, from ~$250, on both sites, then ask the operator about a private date. The tour runs 6–7 hours from 9 am with pickup around the Flathead Valley. The picnic lunch and park entry are part of the price.

Seats in a small van, lunch packed

A 6–7-hour day along Lake McDonald with a local guide, from ~$250 with the picnic and park entry included. On Viator the price adjusts to your group's size, and both sites cancel free up to 24 hours ahead.

Smaller groups in the snow

Winter is the quieter season for sharing a guide. Tour Glacier's winter driving tour, from ~$250, gives a standard group of up to 20 on GetYourGuide, five fewer than the summer cap, and a party that wants the van to itself can ask the operator about a private winter date the same way. The catch is a cold, short day that stays between West Glacier and about Lake McDonald Lodge. The drive and snowshoe day (~$230) states no group size and has only a handful of reviews.

The nature walk keeps groups small

Glacier Guides' morning nature walk, from ~$70, caps groups at ten on GetYourGuide and 18 on Viator. That is about as intimate as a shared tour gets here. You meet the guide at 9:30 am in West Glacier and are back by 1:30 pm. The size still shows at times, and one reviewer found that when the guide talked while walking, the back of the line missed it, so stay near the front if you like asking questions. You get yourself to West Glacier, though a hotel pickup there may be arranged, and park entrance is not included.

A private SUV and its own guide

The only listing on either site sold as private is Privat Tours Worldwide's private day in a luxury SUV, from ~$1,499, priced per group for up to seven people. You get your own guide and vehicle for 5–8 hours, and the route is customizable, so the day can bend around a slow walker or a child who needs a nap. The catch comes in two parts. It costs far more than a few seats in a van, and it has only three reviews, all five stars, which is too few to judge how steady it is. Before you book, ask whether the price covers lunch and park entrance, since we could not confirm either from the listing.

We also looked at a second private SUV listing on Viator. It had no reviews at all, so we left it out.

When a vehicle of your own pays off

The math is quick. Six seats on the summer driving tour at ~$250 each come to roughly the SUV's ~$1,499, and a seventh traveler tips the balance toward the SUV, since its price covers up to seven. For a couple or a family of four, buying seats is far cheaper. Two things can shift the result. Tour Glacier's group discounts on Viator may bring six seats below the SUV, and the van price includes lunch and park entry, which you should confirm for the SUV. Tips come on top either way, as US guides count on them. Our cost guide runs the totals for a family of four.

Money is only part of it. A private day suits travelers who need a slower pace or extra stops, and Glacier tours for seniors and families looks at that side. It also suits anyone who wants to linger when an animal appears, though no tour can promise wildlife.

The e-bike day as a small guided outing

For active travelers, Glacier Hikes & Bikes' e-bike outing, from ~$320, is a guided Sun Road day of 6–8 hours. The bike and a rain jacket are provided, and lunch is a sandwich with fruit. The listing does not state a group size, so ask if a small group matters to you. Its catch is a short track record of four reviews (all five stars). The listing also says it does not suit riders with back problems. None of the main tours crosses Logan Pass, and our Going-to-the-Sun Road guide sets this ride beside the other ways onto the road.

Which setup suits your party

  • Two to five travelers. Buy seats on a Tour Glacier van, or contact the operator about a private date;
  • Six or seven moving at one pace. Price six or seven seats against the private SUV for your date;
  • Curious walkers. The nature walk's small groups give you the most naturalist time per dollar;
  • A base far from the pickup towns. Check where each tour picks you up before you book;
  • Packing for any of them. What to wear and bring covers the day bag.

Getting a guide to yourself

Does Tour Glacier offer private tours?

Its tours are sold as small group, and the summer listing says they are not always private. Tour Glacier asks you to contact it for a private tour, and its Viator pages say the price varies with group size.

How many people are on a Tour Glacier driving tour?

The summer Viator listing caps the group at 25, and the winter GetYourGuide listing gives a standard group of up to 20. Reviewers still describe plenty of stops and a guide who asks where you want to pause.

How much does a private Glacier National Park tour cost?

The private SUV day from Privat Tours Worldwide starts at ~$1,499 per group for up to seven people, for 5 to 8 hours with your own guide and vehicle. It has only three reviews so far.

Is a private tour cheaper for a big family?

At six people it is about even, because six times ~$250 for the summer van lands close to the SUV's ~$1,499. With seven the SUV comes out ahead, but check what each price includes and ask Tour Glacier about group discounts.

Is the nature walk a small group?

Yes. Glacier Guides caps it at ten guests on GetYourGuide and 18 on Viator. Park entrance is not included, so bring your pass.
